Which height?

Height is the one choice that really matters here. Pick by your mattress and your sleeping position, not by your body size.

Standard · 23.6 by 15.7 in, 3.1 to 3.9 in high. Softer mattresses, back sleepers, smaller frames.

Tall · 24.4 by 16.5 in, 4.3 to 5.1 in high. Firmer mattresses, side sleepers, broader shoulders.

How to choose. Go by your mattress first. A firmer mattress means you sink into it less, so more of the gap between your head and the bed is left for the pillow to fill. Firm bed, take the Tall. Then by position: mostly your side, take the Tall; mostly your back, take the Standard. Then by what you sleep on now: if you stack two pillows or fold one in half, you have been compensating for something too short, so take the Tall.

A stack of ordinary pillows piled up to make enough height

The problem

Your head weighs about ten pounds.

Something has to hold it for eight hours. If your pillow sits at the wrong height, your neck muscles do the holding instead, and that is what you are feeling in the morning.

Most people solve this by stacking. A second pillow, or one folded in half, propped up to close the gap. It works for about twenty minutes, then it slides.

If you have been stacking pillows, you are not fussy. You have been compensating for something that is too short.

How it works

One flat slab cannot fit both ways of sleeping

Back sleepers need less height. Side sleepers need more. Dividing the surface is what lets a single pillow do both.

The pillow seen from directly overhead
ACentre cradle
A shallow dish with a small vent at its lowest point. It holds the back of the head and stops it rolling, and it is the lowest part of the pillow, because lying on your back needs the least height.
BRaised outer areas
The four arms around the cradle sit taller. When you turn onto your side, your shoulder takes up the width of your body, and that extra height is what stops your neck folding down toward the mattress.
CShoulder and neck edge
The edge nearest you drops away to meet the gap between your neck and the mattress, so there is contact along the curve of your neck instead of a hollow underneath it.
DHand rests
The outer tips are there for the arm people tuck up beside their head, so tucking it does not lift the whole pillow and your head along with it.

The only real decision

Which height is yours?

Three questions. None of them are about how big you are.

01How firm is your mattress?
02Which position do you spend the night in?
03How many pillows are you using now?

Answer all three and we will tell you which one to take.

Still unsure? Ask us before you order and we will talk it through.

Standard and Tall heights compared on a shared baseline

Two heights

The rule that catches people out

The instinct is to match pillow height to body size. It is the wrong rule. What matters is how far you sink into the mattress.

A firmer mattress means you sink in less, so more of the gap between your head and the bed is left for the pillow to fill. Firm bed, take the Tall. A soft or well worn mattress lets your shoulder drop in, which closes the gap, so the Standard is usually right.

That last row is not a typo. Contoured foam feels strange at first, and we would rather you knew now.

The first two weeks

Night one will feel wrong. That is normal.

Almost everyone who gives up on a pillow like this gives up in the first three days. Here is what actually happens.

Nights one to three

Firm and unfamiliar

Slow rebound foam is firm at room temperature and your neck is used to a different angle. People describe it as lying on a rock. This part passes.

Week one

It starts to give

The surface begins taking your shape within a few minutes of lying down, rather than after an hour. Mornings start changing before the nights do.

Week two

You will know

If it still feels wrong now, it is the height that is wrong and not the pillow. Switch to the other one.

Foam and cover

Dense enough to still be there in a year

The useful measure of memory foam is density, and cheap pillows almost never publish it. What we can tell you is what this one weighs, which is about two and a half pounds. A pillow that collapses in three months is a light one.

The cover is an antibacterial knit that unzips and goes in the machine. The foam does not.

We are not going to tell you it sleeps cool. Memory foam holds heat, and a gel layer reduces that rather than removing it. If overheating is your main problem at night, this is not the fix for it.

Four things worth knowing

4

Four zones

A divided surface, so one pillow suits a back sleeper and a side sleeper.

2

Two heights

Standard at 3.1 to 3.9 in and Tall at 4.3 to 5.1 in. Chosen by your mattress.

▢

Washable cover

Antibacterial knit that unzips. A standard pillowcase fits over it too.

○

Centre vent

An opening at the lowest point of the cradle keeps air moving under your head.

Two pillows side by side on a bed, one Dusk Blue and one Stone Gray

Two pillows

Beds usually have two sides

Two people rarely need the same height. One of you sinks into the mattress differently, sleeps on a different side, has a different shoulder. Buying a pair means you can take one of each and swap if you guessed wrong.

Questions

The things people actually ask

How long before I know whether it suits me?
Give it two weeks of full nights. The first three tell you very little and they are the worst ones. If you are still waking up stiff after a fortnight, it is the height that is wrong rather than the pillow.
Will it fix my neck pain?
It can help the kind that comes from eight hours at a bad angle, and you would usually notice that within two weeks. It will not touch pain that is there all day regardless of how you slept. This is a pillow, not a treatment for anything, and if your pain does not change no matter what you lie on, please go and see someone about it.
Does it sleep hot?
Memory foam holds more heat than down or fibre does. The knit cover and the vent in the centre help a little. If you already overheat at night, we would not tell you this solves it.
Which height if I am between the two?
Go by the mattress. Firmer bed, take the Tall. It is the single answer that gets this right most often, and it surprises people, because the instinct is to match pillow height to body size instead.
I sleep on my front. Is this for me?
No. Front sleepers want something very flat, and no contoured pillow is built for it. We would rather say so now than have it arrive and disappoint you.
Can I use my own pillowcase?
Yes, a standard case fits over either size, though a case that is much too big will bunch up in the contours. The knit cover it comes with is the one that is actually shaped to it.
What is it like out of the box?
Foam pillows are compressed for shipping, so lay it flat and leave it a few hours before you sleep on it, and up to 48 if the room is cold. New foam has a faint smell that airs out within a few days.
What if I just do not get on with it?
Then send it back. Nobody can tell from a product page whether a shape suits their neck, and we would rather you tried it than talked yourself into it. The returns terms are linked at the bottom of every page.

Pick the height. Give it two weeks.

Firmer mattress or mostly side sleeping, take the Tall. Softer mattress or mostly back sleeping, take the Standard. Then give it a fortnight before you judge it, because the first three nights will lie to you.
